Spike’s final fight with Vicious wasn’t about payback or revenge. Sure there are single episodes that deals with the themes of revenge but it isn’t the core of the story between Spike and Vicious. The core story of Cowboy Bebop is very much about human ties and how we relate to ourselves and others. And having the Syndicate/Vicious in his rearview mirror all the time is no way to live, so if he ever wanted to live a normal life he needed to confront his past. So instead of hiding from it, he decided he would rather face it head-on. He went after Vicious because he knew his past will eventually catch up too him.
Spike did not go after Vicious because he wanted too or wanted revenge.
Imagine watching the story of Cowboy Bebop and the struggle between Spike and Vicious and thinking it is a story about revenge. So let me begrudgingly start picking this garbage apart: Clearly, Javier did not watch Cowboy Bebop hence the shallow understanding of Spike and the story of Cowboy Bebop. Yes, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, Javier Reyes a writer and journalist for the website Nerdist is comparing the story’s of Cowboy Bebop and The Last of Us Part 2 and somehow drew a parallel between the characters of Spike Spiegel and Ellie Williams. One is a video game while the other is one of the most well-known Anime shows in the history of Anime. This has to be the worst article and comparison between two stories taking place in two different forms of media. I think I have found the contender for the worst hot take and article for 2020, and that is saying a lot! Especially considering the absolute shit that has been written by video game “journalists ” the last 8 months. Warning spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2 and Cowboy Bebop.
